Why is it great to join in student activities?

Find new friends with various student activities.

While higher education is an opportunity to develop the key skills and knowledge that you will need for your future career, it is simply impossible to study and work around the clock. If students can step away from the books now and again, not only will they give themselves the best chance to absorb their learning, but can enjoy the sights and sounds of what New Zealand has to offer.

AIS student activities

It is important to sometimes stop studying and explore the city.It is important to sometimes stop studying and explore the city.

At Auckland Institute of Studies, we have a dedicated activity calendar where English Language Centre students can plan outings around the City of Sails. Most of these activities are free with certain trips carrying a small fee. Here is a list of activity examples from the last couple of months.

  • Indoor soccer
  • Learn to Surf
  • Rugby matches
  • St Lukes/Lynnmall/Westgate/DressSmart Shopping malls
  • Mission Bay/St Heliers Beaches
  • Ambury Farm
  • Mt Albert Wave Pool/Henderson Pool
  • Cornwallis beach
  • Horse riding
  • Indoor climbing

This is not an exhaustive list and there are plenty of other activities that we have planned over the coming months. So, apart from being a lot of fun, why should you sign up to participate in our student activities? Read on to find out.

Meeting new people

You can use our student activities to widen your social circle and meet those who have similar interests to yourself.

If you are new to New Zealand, there is the chance that you don't know many people outside your course and accommodation. As such, you can use our student activities to widen your social circle and meet those who have similar interests to yourself.

For example, if you are an avid fan of football and have enjoyed the latest Premier League season, you may find like-minded individuals at Indoor soccer – perhaps even enough people to start your own team!

Additionally, should you have a love of fashion and clothing, a trip to one of Auckland's local shopping malls might find a fellow shopaholic!

Connection to AIS

Since the bulk of our students are from overseas, we at AIS like to think of ourselves as your extended family. Instead of just coming to campus to attend lectures and classes, we want our students to feel more connected with each other and with the environment.

Through student activities, everyone can be involved regardless of age, gender or ethnicity and enjoy spending time with those in the same situation as themselves. At the end of the day, higher education is more than just study, it can be a lot of fun as well!
