Hello everyone. My name is Barbara Salas and I’m from Chile. I am currently studying Bachelor of Information Technology at Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS).

While at Hobbiton, Barb says, "I want to get a little bit of New Zealand in me"

My diverse background in Chile: Before coming to New Zealand for further study, I studied Bachelor of Biochemistry at the University of Chile for five years. After graduation, I was further trained in the Police Department and worked as a Detective for seven years.

Now, I’m studying in the IT programme at AIS and I want to become a data scientist in the near future. My diverse background in education and work experience actually supported my further study and helped me to adapt quickly to the new environment.

My new life in NZ: I have found my professors and classmates at AIS to be very supportive. Why did I choose New Zealand? Because it is a wonderful country with nice people and similar weather to Chile. Together with my family, we have traveled to a variety of tourist attractions. To my family, New Zealand or “Aotearoa” is a perfect place to study and share with family and friends.

Meet Archana Kawatra – Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management – AIS Alumni 2018

February 14, 2018 |

Hi, my name is Archana Kawatra and I have just started my full-time job as Head of Sales and Marketing for Amora Hotel Auckland, New Zealand.

Archana Kawatra completed Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management (GDTM) at Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS)

I completed the Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management (GDTM) at Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS) successfully in December 2017 with GPA of 8.143. Together with previous international work experience in India and Dubai in different hotels, I was offered a full time position right after graduation.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to AIS and lecturers who have contributed to my journey to success today. My special gratitude goes to Dr. Semisi Taumoepeau, lecturer Dr. Jonathon Spring, Anna Addison and Dr. Nick Towner for a great programme. They all made the course seem to be very easy with so much fun and enthusiasm. I have learnt a lot of practical skill sets in Tourism to apply into the work place.

I am also very happy to get a Scholarship for Academic Excellence for the third semester, and this I believe is indeed very motivating.

I have travelled across New Zealand during the last year and have explored Waiheke Island, Coromandel, Tauranga, Rotorua and the Hobbiton Movie Set – to name a few places.

My name is Bhoomika Patel I am currently studying Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS).

New Zealand offers a lot of beautiful scenery for international students to explore

Shakespeare Regional Park, New Zealand

Nature lovers: Anyone who loves nature and scenic beauty cannot ignore New Zealand. I fell in love with New Zealand while I travelled around this beautiful country and enjoyed many breath-taking views of beaches, mountains, waterfalls and rainbows.

Surrounded by coastlines you are never too far from a beach in New Zealand

Muriwai Beach, New Zealand

Adventure: New Zealand is unique in its adventure. I have participated in many thrilling activities in New Zealand such as Kayaking, Luge Rides, Gondola, Zip line and Sky-Swing everywhere we go.

Rotorua is the North Island's adventure tourism capital

Rotorua Skyline, New Zealand

I am planning to explore more adventures in Queenstown which is the hub of beautiful scenery and full of thrilling games. I found New Zealand to be a real goddess of nature.

Exciting local culture: While living in New Zealand I also learnt many Maori words to enhance my knowledge about local culture. They have very different pronunciation and it is difficult for me but I have enjoyed learning it. I have read many blogs, histories and articles about New Zealand history and its festivals such as Tamaki Herenga Waka Festival, Waitangi Day and many cities’ establishment anniversaries and so on.

The culture of New Zealand is so amazing, I have enjoyed watching Haka performances many times already. I found New Zealand a paradise which soothes the soul and gives peace. For me, New Zealand is a blend of ‘Beauty’, ‘Nature’ and ‘Peace’.

New Zealand In Me – Running for Exploring Auckland

February 7, 2018 |

#NZinme – mini-blog contest (by Sisilia Pujiastuti)

New Zealand is famous for its natural beauty. That was one of the reasons I came to this country. I’m currently studying Postgraduate Diploma of Business Administration (PGDBA) at Auckland Institute of Studies, New Zealand.

Beating the streets of Auckland helps to explore new places

Sisil participates in the BMW virtual challenge to explore more of the beauty of Auckland

BMW virtual running event: This month, I joined BMW virtual running event, in which all participants can run wherever they are, record it by a run tracking application and then submit it to the event application. This event gave me an idea to explore Auckland, the city where I live today by running. I need to run 125km, which I have to reach for the duration of January 28th to March 4th. I can run anywhere, with minimum distance of 1 km I can submit in the application and the amount will be accumulated.

An opportunity to explore the city: As a student with a part-time job, I have been too busy and do not have many opportunities to explore the city. To reach 125km I have a chance to always run to different destinations. I collected the addresses of some friends and listed them in my running list. I will reach the finish line with a great experience, visit some new places and meet good friends.
