Best beaches for your summer in Auckland

Enjoy a day (or two) at an Auckland beach this summer!

If this is your first summer in New Zealand after a year studying at Auckland Institute of Studies, you are in for a real treat over the next couple of months. The City of Sails is tailor-made for summer with two harbours, countless regional parks and more than its fair share of beaches.

That's because summer is all about the beach in New Zealand – the beautiful blue/green sea, sunbathing and catching up with friends. With so many beaches to choose from, what are the best beaches in the Auckland region to include on a road trip? Whichever you choose, just make sure to take along a hat and sunscreen!

Mission Bay

One of the closest beaches to the Auckland CBD is Mission Bay – located east along Tamaki Drive. The popular summer spot offers spectacular views out to the Waitemata Harbour, Rangitoto Island and the North Shore, all in the setting of an inner city suburb. The waves at Mission Bay are usually very tame, with the location often used by kayakers, windsurfers and other water sport enthusiasts.

Once you are done sunning yourself on the beach, venture inland past the famous water fountain and enjoy one of the many cafes and restaurants situated along Tamaki Drive – the perfect way to cap a day at Mission Bay!

Piha Beach

If you're looking for a beach with a difference, there is no going past the west coast paradise of Piha beach. Located 50 minutes from the Auckland CBD and past the Waitakere Ranges, Piha Beach is a rugged black sand summer hotspot that needs to be seen to be believed.

Piha Beach is famous for its pounding surf so it is important to only swim when lifeguards are on duty and between their red and yellow flags. Of course, if you are not confident in the water, you could climb the 101m Lion Rock or venture into the ranges to search for the beautiful Kitekite Falls.

The North Shore is blessed with countless beautiful beaches – stretching from Cheltenham Beach in the south to Orewa in the north. Just 20 minutes north of the Harbour Bridge along State Highway 1, you'll find the bustling town of Orewa, before the Waiwera hill. The 3 kilometre golden sand beach is popular with surfers and swimmers alike and is well-known for its plentiful parkland for a picnic in the sun.

On a stunning Auckland summer day, take your time in Orewa – sampling the various cafes, restaurants and shops along the main road. Don't forget to treat yourself to an ice-cream before you head home!

Point Chevalier Beach

The closest beach to the Auckland Institute of Studies campus, Point Chevalier Beach is a lovely spot to spend a lazy summer afternoon. The beach faces west towards the inner Waitemata Harbour so it is sheltered from wind and rough surf – perfect for watersports and swimmers alike.

While the beach is pretty unique itself, the adjacent Coyle Park is well worth a visit. Have yourself a BBQ at one of the free kitchen areas or just grab a book and rest in the shade under a large trees. Of course, if the temperature gets a little too hot, you could always go back down to the beach and cool off!

Enjoy your summer in Auckland

Auckland is a special city regardless of the season, but summer really takes the cake. Be sure to check out one (or more) of the stunning beaches located around the region. Just remember to always swim between the flags and apply that sunscreen regularly!
